Character a Key Factor
National Signing Day features 79 DeKalb County signatures

February 4, 2009 was the first day high school football players could sign their national letters of intent to play on the next level and further their educations.

The day featured 79 DeKalb County gridiron stars signing to play at the college of their choice next fall. The number far exceeded the first day total of 48 of a year ago. The current total of 82 almost equaled the total number of signees (83) from 2008.

The 82 student-athletes include at least one signee from 16 of the 19 DeKalb County School System high schools. There are more expected signees in the near future as the athletes and colleges make final decisions over the next few weeks.

Thirty-eight of the athletes signed with either the Division 1 Bowl Subdivision (18) or the Division I Championship Subdivision (20). The other 51 signed with Division II, Division III, NAIA, junior college or prep schools.

The colleges/prep schools represented 18 states and Washington D.C. including Georgia (15), Tennessee (13), Alabama (8), North Carolina (7), Florida (6), Mississippi (6), Iowa (4), New Mexico (3), Ohio (3), Washington D.C. (2), Massachusetts (2), Kentucky (2), South Carolina (2) and one each from the states of Michigan, Arizona, Colorado, West Virginia, Maryland and Louisiana.

2008 STATE CHAMPS
Players are selected for the DeKalb
All-Star Bowl based on four criteria:
     Academics
     Student Leadership
     Character and Commitment
     Athletics
Coaches from all public and private high schools in DeKalb County are asked to nominate players for the All-Star Bowl that demonstrate not only athletic and playing ability, but who have consistently supported their schools and athletics programs through leadership and character.
During the All-Star week, community leaders, business men and women, youth organizations, and local and state governments are invited to interact with the athletes about the importance of carrying their achievements in sports into a life of service and commitment to their community.
